Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Hi, I’m Louisa, and a frequently asked questions isn’t just a generic page. As someone who asks a billion and one (small exaggeration) questions at the doctor’s office, it’s a core value for me to be here and answer questions wherever I can.  FAQs

  • The purpose of an assessment is not only to assess whether a diagnosis describes your experience (e.g., do I have autism? Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder?), but to help you understand what is contributing to your day to day discomfort and concerns, and to help you find ways to improve your quality of life.

    Specifically, a diagnosis may:

    • Provide access to funds or programs (e.g., disability benefits)

    • Promote more positive self-understanding

    • Provide opportunities to tackle co-occuring concerns (e.g., executive functioning, mental health)

    • Build better relationships (e.g., friends, work, spouse)

    • Provide recommendations for accommodations at school or at work

    • Enable individuals to receive appropriate support and care

    • Provide opportunities to connect with others who have similar experiences

  • For a diagnostic assessment, Dr. Man will review your history and current behaviours and concerns and administer a variety of measures to determine if you meet criteria for a specific diagnosis (such as an Autism, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder).

Assessment measures may include an assessment of social communication and behaviour, masking/camouflaging, social cognition, emotional understanding, executive functioning, problem solving, functional daily living skills/adaptive behaviour, sensory processing, etc.

Comprehensive cognitive, academic, and memory testing are generally not administered for the purposes of a diagnostic assessment.

    • Details & full-profile —

    • Recommendations from a balanced double empathy perspective — what this means is a balance between suggestions for you, but also suggestions for how your environment can support you.

    • Understanding of evolving landscape of autism research — autism and ADHD research has evolved a lot over the last 20-30 years; my PhD, post-doctoral work has been a core part of ensuring that I am as up to date, using a collaborative stance with neurodivergent voices.

  • OHIP does not cover the cost of assessment; however, many private insurance plans may cover part of the cost.

If you are planning to submit a claim for the cost of the assessment through your insurance company, please verify the coverage provided in advance of your assessment. I will provide you with an itemized invoice for insurance purposes.

For comprehensive assessments, a psychometrist may complete some psychometric testing (i.e., the psychoeducational testing portion). If you are planning to claim the full cost of an assessment through extended health coverage, please ensure that your coverage includes psychological services by a psychometrist, supervised by a registered psychologist. Please note that clients are responsible for paying the fee for the service on the date of service and then may submit the receipt for reimbursement.

If you are a student at college or university, and are receiving OSAP you may qualify for a bursary to cover part of the cost of an assessment. If another practitioner has completed an assessment in the recent past (e.g., within the last year), this may reduce the time and cost involved. This should be discussed with Dr. Man in advance of the assessment.
